ACC lauds WB decision

DHAKA, Apr 18: The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has welcomed the World Bank’s decision to bar Canada-based SNC-Lavalin Inc and its 100-odd affiliates for 10 years.
“We welcome the World Bank’s decision. The decision will serve as a lesson when international projects like the Padma Bridge are taken up in future,” said ACC chairman Ghulam Rahman while talking to reporters at the ACC head office on Thursday. The anti-graft watchdog chief made the remarks a day after the World Bank announced the debarment of SNC-Lavalin Inc and over 100 of its affiliates for 10 years following the firm’s misconduct in connection with appointment of a consultancy firm for the Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) project as well as its misconduct under another project of the Bank.

DSE gains nominally, CSE ends negative

Dhaka, Apr 18 (UNB) – Share prices at the country’s premier bourse Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) gained nominally at close while those at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended negative on Thursday, the last trading day of the week.
The DSE benchmark index, DGEN gained 5.59 points or 0.15 percent to reach 3707.48 at close today.

Export earnings from USA, the largest export destination for Bangladesh goods, witnessed a 4.70 percent growth during the first eight months (July-February) of the current fiscal (2012-13), mostly due to moderate performance of the RMG sector.
The export earnings totaled US$ 3,471.48 million during July-Feb of current fiscal (2012-13) compared to $ 3,315.73 million during the same period of the previous year (2011-12).

Foreigners allowed to transfer 75 pc of net income - Economists fear capital flight

In a rather wishful policy decision Bangladesh Bank has revised its income repatriation policy regime for foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. The central bank in a circular distributed to the media said foreign nationals may repatriate 75 percent of their net income to their home countries which was 50 percent up to now.
Economists have expressed skepticism at the decision and said it may accelerate capital flight.
Why it has made the dramatic change in the transfer regime of the income of the foreign nationals is not clear, they said.
The decision will cover officials at various levels in the public and private sectors. Bangladesh Bank issued the circular Tuesday (yesterday) and also issued instructions at the same time to commercial banks to practice the new rule
from now.

‘Fall in machinery imports testimony to weak investment’

DHAKA, APR 16: The economy witnessed a substantial 18.46 per cent decline in import of capital machinery during the first eight months of current fiscal (2012-13). Manufacturers said this declined imports caused slower growth of investment.  Import of industrial raw materials also fell considerably during the July-February period of the current fiscal.
Sources attributed the reasons behind the slow growth of investment in private sector to persistent power and energy crisis, frequent Hartal call and political uncertainty.
